COVID threats plague the Olympics

Several Olympic teams arriving in Japan have been affected by COVID-19 cases, including Brazil’s judo team which is isolating after hotel staff tested positive.

There are countless protocols in Japan to ensure the Games are safe but there are fears over the event.

Public health expert Professor Kenji Shibuya says the Olympics should be a symbol of “unity and peace”.

“The prime minister said it’s a symbol of victory over the COVD pandemic but unfortunately it’s becoming totally the opposite,” Professor Shibuya said.

Japan has been racing to improve its slow vaccination rates with just 20 per cent of people being protected and the country unable to risk a super-spreader event.
