Man accused of murdering 70-year-old in home invasion

A man has been charged with murder after he allegedly killed a 70-year-old with a baseball bat during a home invasion on the Central Coast.

A 10-year-old girl and a 67-year-old woman were also at the home during the alleged attack on Tuesday, on Trigg Road at Chittaway Bay, about 8.45pm.

Police say the alleged killer, 30, was arrested the following day when he was spotted running from his home after he saw police searching it.

He allegedly broke into the 70-year-old man’s home and seriously assaulted him with a baseball bat, before fleeing on foot.

The man suffered injuries to his head and was taken to Gosford Hospital in a critical condition but died a short time later.

The child and woman who were at the home during the alleged murder were not injured.

A crime scene was established and officers from Tuggerah Lakes police district, with assistance from the homicide squad, began an investigation into the man’s death.

About midday on Wednesday, police executed a search warrant at a home on Lorraine Avenue, Berkeley Vale, and seized a number of items.

While at the address, the alleged attacker attended and upon sighting police, allegedly ran from the scene.

He was arrested nearby, with police finding a baseball bat and jacket allegedly dumped by the man in a neighbouring garden.

He was taken to Wyong police station and charged with murder. The man was refused bail to appear in Wyong Local Court on Thursday.
